Walking and Hiking Around Girvan

Shoreline, coach road, ridge and forest: the best routes within an hour, graded honestly.

CoastHillsForest

Pictured: Girvan beach looking south — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Girvan sits where three quite different kinds of walking meet: a hundred-mile coastal path along the shore, a line of steep grassy hills immediately behind the town, and the Galloway hills and forest an hour inland. You can have a flat mile on tarmac or a full mountain day, and both start from the same car park.

The three kinds

The coast. The Ayrshire Coastal Path runs 100 miles from Glenapp to Skelmorlie, and the four stages around Girvan are the wildest on the route — rocky shore, raised beaches and the old coach road over Kennedy's Pass. Buses shadow the A77 between all the stage ends, so you can walk one way and ride back, which is the single most useful fact on this page.

The hills behind the town. Byne Hill is a two-hour climb for the best free view in Carrick. The Grey Hill ridge links it south along the tops to Lendalfoot.

Inland. Galloway Forest Park has everything from the loch circuit at Glen Trool to the Merrick at 843 metres, the highest hill in southern Scotland.

Grading

We grade honestly, because 'coastal walk' can mean a promenade or four miles of pebbles:

GradeWhat it means
EasyFlat and surfaced, under 2 hours, suitable for most
ModeratePaths and tracks, some climbing, 2–4 hours, boots
StrenuousHill terrain, navigation needed, 4+ hours, full kit

Before you set out

Carry OS Explorer 317 (or the relevant sheet inland) and know how to use it — several of these routes have no constructed path. Check the tide before any shore section, as some are impassable at high water. Take a waterproof whatever the forecast says; this is the west coast.

Much of the low ground is working farmland with livestock, so follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, keep dogs under close control and close gates behind you.

The official Ayrshire Coastal Path guidebook, sold online and locally, is worth having for the stage descriptions and the local history. Proceeds go to Rotary charity projects.
