Fish and Chips in Girvan

A harbour town with a fishing fleet — of course the chips are good.

Pictured: Girvan beach and Byne Hill — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Girvan has a reputation along the A77 as a fish-and-chip stop, and it is deserved. This is a working harbour town with a fishing history, the chips are good, and you can eat them looking at Ailsa Craig.

Where to get them

Graziano's – Harbour Café, 37 Knockcushan Street, is the one people drive out of their way for. It is a small family-run fish and chip shop right on the harbour, doing both sit-in and takeaway, with a full menu, children's options and tea if you want to sit down properly. Locally sourced fish, large portions and a good deal of friendly banter across the counter.

The Marine Fish Restaurant, 26 Bridge Street, is the other long-standing option, a couple of minutes inland.

For chips alongside other things, A1 Munch on Bridge Street and Girvan Pizzeria both do them with kebabs, pizza and burgers — see takeaways.

Where to eat them

This is the part that matters, and Girvan is unusually well supplied.

  • The harbour wall, thirty seconds from Graziano's, watching the boats and looking for seals. Do not feed the seals.
  • A bench in Knockcushan Gardens, up behind the harbour, when the wind is up. It is the sheltered option and most visitors do not know it is there.
  • A prom shelter, facing west, an hour before sunset with Ailsa Craig on the horizon. This is the one.
  • The beach itself at low tide, if it is calm.

A warning worth taking seriously: the gulls here are organised. Eat with your back to a wall, do not wave chips about, and do not encourage them — a bird taking a supper out of a child's hands is a genuinely upsetting experience and it happens every summer.

Further afield

Up the coast, Wildings at Maidens does a refined restaurant version if you want fish and chips with a tablecloth. Souter's Inn at Kirkoswald does a pub version. Neither is a substitute for a paper-wrapped supper on the harbour wall.
