  • Non-golfers: beach, harbour, Galloway Forest Park, the coast road south.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

What is a good three-day golf itinerary from Girvan?

Girvan on day one, the King Robert the Bruce or Ailsa at Turnberry on day two, and Prestwick or Belleisle on day three — or follow James Braid from Girvan to Belleisle to Stranraer for under £130 in fees.

How far in advance do I need to book Royal Troon and Turnberry?

Royal Troon six to nine months for its Monday/Tuesday/Thursday visitor days; Turnberry's Ailsa three to six months for summer, less in spring and autumn.

How much golf can you fit into three days?

Three or four rounds comfortably. The Braid trail — Girvan, Belleisle and Seafield — works well and costs a fraction of the championship itinerary.

Which itinerary suits a first visit?

The five-day Ayrshire coast, which takes in Turnberry, Girvan, Prestwick and Troon with a spare day for weather. It covers both Open venues without rushing.

Is there a cheaper alternative to the Ayrshire itinerary?

Yes — the Galloway option runs four days for under £250 in green fees, taking in Stranraer, Portpatrick, Wigtownshire County and Newton Stewart.

What are the booking lead times?

Months for summer times at Royal Troon and Turnberry; a few weeks for Prestwick and Western Gailes; days for the council courses. Book the restricted ones first and build the trip around them.
