Pictured: Girvan beach at dusk — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Golf was played at Southern Gailes from 1911, the army took the land in the Second World War, and it lay dormant until Loch Lomond Golf Club bought it in 2003 and had Kyle Phillips build a winter escape for its members. In 2021 new owners transformed it with a clubhouse, the Canny Crow restaurant, a whisky room and lodges, and it has since hosted the Scottish Open and the Women's Scottish Open. It is a big, modern links across the railway from Western Gailes: wide fairways, deep revetted bunkers, water on a handful of holes and greens that reward thought, and it stands up to its historic neighbours. It is also the most visitor-friendly of the championship courses — any day, clear pricing, instant online booking.
