Day Trip: The Carrick Castle Coast

Two castles, a lighthouse, a magic hill and the best coast road in Ayrshire.

CarFamilyFull day

This is the day to do first. In forty miles it takes in a lighthouse you can walk to across a golf links, one of the great houses of Scotland, a beach, an optical illusion that has baffled people for a century, and a free clifftop castle with a very dark story — and it does it along the A719, which is the finest stretch of road on this coast.

The route runs north from Girvan and comes back the same way, so you can shorten it at any point without ruining the day. With small children, cut the lighthouse walk and give the time to Culzean's playgrounds instead.

Notes on the stops

Turnberry lighthouse stands on the site of Turnberry Castle, a plausible birthplace of Robert the Bruce, and you reach it on a path across the championship links. Keep to the marked route, watch for golf, and give way to players.

Culzean is the anchor of the day and deserves at least three hours. The Robert Adam house has the famous oval staircase and the Eisenhower apartment; outside there are 600 acres of country park, a walled garden, the Swan Pond, two adventure playgrounds and a beach below the cliffs. The castle interior is seasonal and the country park is open year-round. Entry is paid, and free to National Trust for Scotland members.

The Electric Brae takes five minutes and costs nothing. Stop in the marked lay-by, take the handbrake off, and watch the car apparently roll uphill. It is an illusion created by the lie of the land, and it works every time.

Croy Shore below the brae is a long quiet beach, excellent for rock pools at low tide and usually near-empty.

Dunure finishes the day: a free castle ruin on the rocks, a small harbour, a play park and turf labyrinth at Kennedy Park, and a café and pub for tea. The castle is where the 4th Earl of Cassillis roasted the Commendator of Crossraguel over a fire in 1570 to make him sign over the abbey lands — a story children find extremely satisfying.

Practical notes

Culzean is the only paid entry on the route, and the only place you need to think about opening times. Everything else is open access. Parking is free at Maidens, the Electric Brae lay-by, Croy Shore and Dunure's Kennedy Park.

Fuel and shops in Maidens and Dunure are limited — Girvan and Maybole are the reliable stops. The A719 is narrow and busy with cyclists on summer weekends, so take it slowly, which is the point anyway. Coming home, the A77 takes half an hour from Dunure, or you can retrace the coast road for the sunset over Arran.

Suggested plan

How to spend your time

  1. 9.00
    Maidens and Turnberry lighthouse

Fourteen minutes north. Walk across the links to the lighthouse and back, about an hour, then coffee in the village.

  2. 11.00
    Culzean Castle

Castle interior first while you are fresh, then the cliff path, walled garden and Swan Pond. Lunch at the Home Farm café.

  3. 14.30
The Electric Brae and Croy Shore

Ten minutes north on the A719. Let the car roll uphill, then drop down to the beach for rock pools.

  4. 15.30
    Dunure

Free castle, harbour, Kennedy Park and the labyrinth; tea at the harbour café.

  5. 17.00
    Home by the coast road

Thirty minutes back on the A77, or retrace the A719 for the light — with supper at Kirkoswald on the way.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

How long does the Carrick castle coast day take?

A full day — roughly 9am to 5pm — for about 40 miles of driving. You can cut it short at any point, since the route runs out and back.

How much does this day trip cost?

Culzean Castle is the only paid entry, and is free to National Trust for Scotland members. Turnberry lighthouse, the Electric Brae, Croy Shore and Dunure Castle are all free, with free parking.

Is this a good day trip with children?

One of the best. Culzean has two adventure playgrounds and a beach, Dunure has a play park and a turf labyrinth beside a free castle, and the Electric Brae is a five-minute piece of magic.

What is the Electric Brae?

A stretch of the A719 where the lie of the surrounding land makes a downhill slope look like an uphill one, so a car left out of gear appears to roll upwards. It is free, takes five minutes, and works every time.

Can you walk to Turnberry lighthouse?

Yes, on a path across the championship links from Maidens — about an hour there and back. Keep to the marked route and give way to golfers.

What if it rains?

Do Culzean's interior and Souter Johnnie's Cottage at Kirkoswald in the morning, then drive on to the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum at Alloway for the afternoon.

Is Culzean open all year?

The country park is open year-round; the castle interior is seasonal and generally closed over winter. Check before travelling if the house is the reason you are going.
