Family Things to Do in Girvan

Sandcastles, pedal boats, puffins, a real jail and a castle with a secret beach.

Family-friendlyAll ages

Girvan is an easy town with children, mostly because everything is in one place. The beach, play park, putting green and boating pond sit together at the harbour end of the promenade, the chip shops and the ice-cream parlour are across the road, and there are toilets nearby. You can park once and not move the car all day.

When you need more, Culzean and its adventure playgrounds are twenty minutes north, Heads of Ayr Farm Park about thirty, and Ayr — with a bigger beach, indoor play and a cinema — half an hour away or a direct train ride.

By age

Swimming

The Quay Zone at the harbour has the pool. It reopened in January 2026 after two years closed by storm damage, with the pool, gym and studio running seven days a week; the café and the four-level soft play were part of a second phase still to be completed, so check before you promise anyone a soft play afternoon. The pool timetable includes public and lane swimming, lessons, aquafit and inflatable fun sessions.

Eating with children

Fish and chips on the harbour wall is the classic and still the best. Beyond that, see our family-friendly places to eat and the Gelateria, which is the reliable bribe at the end of a long walk.

When it rains

The two free museums, the Quay Zone pool, and then the car: Culzean's castle interior at twenty minutes, the Burns Birthplace Museum at thirty-five with its own play park, or Ayr for Pirate Pete's indoor play and the cinema. See Girvan on a rainy day.

Practical notes

The beach is sandy with a shingle band at the top, and wide and firm at low tide; there are no lifeguards, so keep children clear of the harbour mouth. Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round. Parking at the harbour and Ainslie Park is free. The promenade is level and pushchair-friendly, though Stumpy Tower's stairs are emphatically not. See accessibility and where to stay.
