Everything you need to sort out before coming, in one place.
The short version
Getting here is straightforward: the A77 from Glasgow takes about an hour and a half, and Girvan is on the Glasgow–Stranraer railway with a station a ten-minute walk from the harbour. Glasgow Prestwick airport is forty minutes up the road. See getting here.
Parking is free — at the harbour, at Ainslie Park and at the station — which is a genuine advantage over the bigger Ayrshire towns. Motorhomes have a formal council scheme at Knockcushan Street. See parking.
Staying in Girvan costs less than Ayr, Prestwick, Troon or Turnberry, and puts you closer to Culzean and the Galloway hills. See where to stay.
When to come
Late spring and September are the sweet spot — long days, lighter crowds and better rates. July and August are busiest and need booking ahead. The folk festival on the May bank holiday weekend fills the town completely and needs booking months in advance.
Winter is quiet and cheap, with a four o'clock sunset and empty beaches, but several places close or cut their hours — see Girvan in winter and check before travelling.
Before you travel
Three things worth knowing about this coast in particular:
- Check the tide before any shore walk. Some coastal path sections are impassable at high water.
- Boat trips cancel for weather more often than visitors expect. Build in a spare day.
- Kitchens stop early, and several close two or three days a week, particularly at the start of the week and out of season. Ring ahead.
