Why base a golf holiday in Girvan

  • Turnberry is 12 minutes away — both world top-100 courses — and a night in Girvan costs a fraction of a night at the resort.
  • Everything on the Ayrshire coast is within an hour: Prestwick (40 min), Royal Troon (45), the Gailes trio (55), Ayr's council courses (35).
  • Galloway adds three friendly, cheap clubs to the south — Stranraer (£50), Wigtownshire County (£60), Portpatrick (c. £45) — that Troon-based golfers never reach.
  • A links in town for evening nines, and a train line to Ayr, Prestwick, Troon and Stranraer for car-free days.
  • Non-golfers are looked after: beach, harbour, Culzean, Ailsa Craig boat trips, Galloway Forest Park.

Where to stay

Girvan's hotels (Royal, Westcliffe, Woodland Bay), B&Bs and self-catering cottages take golf parties all year; Wildings at Maidens has rooms two miles from Turnberry's first tee; Trump Turnberry itself gives residents the £475 Ailsa rate; Dundonald Links has lodges for the northern end of a trip; Glenapp Castle is the luxury option south. See accommodation.

Packages and passes

Golf South Ayrshire season ticket (£560, eight courses) or Flexi credit; the Braid Trail and Troon Links Experience; the Gailes Golf Experience; Dundonald's Ultimate Links and Ayrshire packages; Turnberry's Open Links of Ayrshire. Independent tour operators (Golfbreaks and others) bundle Ayrshire courses with Troon hotels — price them against a Girvan base and direct bookings.

When to come

May–June and September for weather, light and availability; July–August for the longest days but the highest fees and fullest tee sheets; April and October for 30–70 per cent lower championship fees; winter for the real bargains (Turnberry £175) and empty courses on the links, which drain.

Prices and visitor policies checked August 2026 against the club's own website and cross-checked with independent golf guides. Clubs revise rates every season and restrict visitor times around competitions, so confirm directly before you book.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

Is Girvan a good base for a golf holiday in Ayrshire?

Yes — it is the closest town to Turnberry, within an hour of every course on the Ayrshire coast and the Galloway clubs, with accommodation far cheaper than Troon, Prestwick or the Turnberry resort.

How many days do you need for a golf holiday in Ayrshire?

Three days covers Girvan, Turnberry and one of Prestwick or Troon; five adds the Gailes courses and Galloway; a week lets you rest a day for Culzean or Ailsa Craig.

What does a golf holiday near Girvan cost?

Green fees range from about £220 for five days on council and Galloway courses to £2,400 for five days on the championship links at summer rates — plus accommodation that is typically £60–120 a night in Girvan.

Why base a golf holiday in Girvan rather than Troon?

Cost and position. Accommodation is markedly cheaper, parking is free, and you are twelve minutes from Turnberry and forty-five from Troon — with Galloway and the Rhins courses to the south as well.

How long should a golf holiday be?

Five days is the sweet spot: enough for the two Open venues plus three or four others, with a rest day for weather. Turnberry and Royal Troon both have restricted visitor days that dictate the shape of the week.

When is the best time to come?

Late April to early October for full course conditions and open visitor days. Shoulder season cuts green fees substantially, and winter golf is genuinely playable on the links.

Are there packages?

Several — the Braid Trail, the Troon Links Experience, the Gailes Golf Experience, Ultimate Links and Open Links of Ayrshire, plus the Golf South Ayrshire season ticket and Flexi points.
