Western Gailes Golf Club

Often only two holes wide between the railway and the sea, and as pure a links as Scotland has.

Pictured: Girvan seafront — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Western Gailes has occupied its slender sliver of linksland since 1897 — a strip between the railway line and the Firth of Clyde so narrow that for long stretches the course is only two holes wide. The routing goes north, then turns south for a long run along the shore, then north again for the final five back to the clubhouse, so the wind is never the same for long. Tight fairways, burns, wicked pot bunkers and greens that reward the low running shot make it 'a thinking person's course'; it rarely needs blind shots for its defence, which is one reason it sits comfortably in the UK top 50 year after year. Arran fills the western horizon.

Who it suits

Experienced golfers who love classic links and can keep a score in wind; the weekday lunch makes it a proper day out. Higher handicappers over the limit should look at Gailes Links or Dundonald next door.

Prices and visitor policies checked August 2026 against the club's own website and cross-checked with independent golf guides. Clubs revise rates every season and restrict visitor times around competitions, so confirm directly before you book.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

How much is Western Gailes in 2026?

£310 per round on weekdays from 1 May to 13 October, including lunch; £335 on summer Saturdays; £245 in late April; £190 in the shoulder months; £95 in winter. Two rounds on the same weekday are £425.

What handicap do you need for Western Gailes?

Maximum 24 for men and 28 for women. Certificates may be requested.

Can visitors play Western Gailes at weekends?

Yes, in limited windows: Saturdays 15.00–16.30 from May to September and Sundays 14.30–16.00. The dining room is closed at weekends.

Why is the course so narrow?

It occupies a slender strip of linksland between the railway line and the Firth of Clyde. For long stretches the course is only two holes wide, which is why the routing runs north, then south along the shore, then north again.

Is lunch included?

On summer weekdays, yes — the £310 weekday fee from May to mid-October includes lunch, which makes it a proper day out rather than just a round. Saturdays and Sundays have bar snacks only.

When is the cheapest time to play?

Winter, at £95 on weekdays from November to mid-March. Shoulder season is £190 in the spring and autumn windows, rising to £245 for late April.

How does booking work?

By phone or the online enquiry form, with a 50 per cent non-refundable deposit due within three weeks of a provisional booking. Visitor tee times fall in set windows rather than through the day.

Is there a package with other courses?

Yes — the Gailes Golf Experience combines Western Gailes, Gailes Links and Dundonald Links at a discounted three-round rate.

Are there discounts for juniors?

Under-16s get 50 per cent off, and PGA members are discounted.

What if you are over the handicap limit?

The limits are 24 for men and 28 for women. Gailes Links or Dundonald Links next door have no such restriction and are excellent alternatives.
