Ayrshire gets around 1,000mm of rain a year, but showers move through quickly on this coast and it is rarely wet all day. The honest advice is to dress for it and go out anyway — a storm beach with the wind coming off Ailsa Craig is a spectacle you will remember longer than any museum. But when you would rather be dry, here is the list, nearest first.
In Girvan
- Stumpy Tower — four floors of exhibits in the old tolbooth jail. Free, volunteer-run, and the stairs are steep and narrow.
- The McKechnie Institute — the town museum and gallery, with changing exhibitions. Free.
- The Quay Zone — the community leisure centre at the harbour, with a swimming pool, gym and fitness studio. It reopened in January 2026 after two years closed by storm damage; the café, soft play, terrace and viewing deck were part of a second phase still to be finished, so check what is open before promising anyone a soft play.
- Cafés — a long breakfast is a legitimate wet-morning activity, and Girvan has several good ones.
- Pubs — the Harbour Bar for a fire and live music upstairs, and others along Dalrymple Street.
- The shops and the volunteer-run Tourist Information Point.
Within half an hour
- Culzean Castle (20 min) — the oval staircase, the armoury and the Eisenhower apartment. The castle interior is seasonal; the country park is open year-round, and a wet walk under those trees is no hardship.
- Souter Johnnie's Cottage, Kirkoswald (15 min) — small, thatched, free, and seasonal.
- Crossraguel Abbey (18 min) — roofless, so not strictly a rainy-day option, but atmospheric in drizzle.
Within an hour
- The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Alloway (35 min) — the best indoor half-day in the region, with the cottage, a café and a play park.
- Ayr (30 min by car, or half an hour by direct train) — much the widest choice near here. The Astoria cinema on Burns Statue Square, the Gaiety Theatre, Rozelle House and the Maclaurin galleries (free, and home to Alexander Goudie's 54 paintings of Tam o' Shanter), Pirate Pete's indoor play on the Esplanade, and the High Street shops. The Citadel Leisure Centre pool has been through a phased refurbishment with closures at different points, so check the council's sport and leisure pages rather than turning up.
- Stranraer and Newton Stewart for museums and shops, and Wigtown (1 hour), Scotland's National Book Town, where a wet afternoon among second-hand bookshops is the entire point.
Making the best of it
Rain here usually comes in bands rather than sitting all day, so check the radar and plan around the gaps rather than writing the day off. Low tide plus a shower is still the best time for rock pools at Kennedy's Pass. And if the wind is up, drive south through the pass to watch the sea break over the rocks at Bennane — from the car, with a flask. See also things to do in Girvan and Girvan with children.
