Pictured: Evening on Girvan beach — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Girvan is well served for a town its size, and the cafés are where a good deal of its character sits. Most keep short daytime hours — this is not a place with a late café culture — so plan breakfast and lunch rather than an evening coffee.

In town

  • Maly's Café, 13 Dalrymple Street — the town's all-day café and something of a local institution. Breakfast, lunch and early dinner, generous portions, good value and quick service. If you want one recommendation, this is it.
  • Simpsons Bakers, Shop & Café, 104 Dalrymple Street — a branch of the century-old south-west Scotland bakery. Pies, morning rolls, cakes, sandwiches and a sit-in counter. The place for a cheap breakfast roll.
  • The Harbour Café side of Graziano's, 37 Knockcushan Street — the sit-in half of the harbour chip shop, with a full menu, children's options and window seats over the boats.
  • Tonka's Kitchen, 27 South Park Avenue — street food and loaded fries with a few indoor seats, towards the south end of town.
  • Greggs, Dalrymple Street, opposite the McKechnie Institute, if that is what is needed.

The end of the promenade

David's Snack Bar in the Ainslie car park is a Girvan fixture: a roadside van at the southern end of the prom, trading for over twenty years, doing soup, stovies, breakfasts, burgers, coffee, cake and ice cream. It is where walkers finish the coastal path stage from Lendalfoot, and the car park is rarely empty. Cash-and-carry simplicity, and better than it has any right to be.

Worth the short drive

  • The Ropes Bistro & Café, Maidens harbour, fourteen minutes north — a terrace over the harbour for pizza, light bites, cakes and a drink, with the best café view on this coast.
  • Dowhill Farm, on the A77 at Turnberry — farm shop and café by the roadside, in the fields where the Ayrshire new potatoes are grown.
  • Souter's Inn, Kirkoswald — open from 9am, so it doubles as a breakfast stop on the way to Culzean.

For a grander coffee, the lounge at Trump Turnberry has the view and the prices to match.

Practical notes

Hours are short and vary, particularly out of season, and Sunday can be thin. See breakfast, lunch and, if it is raining, Girvan on a rainy day — a long breakfast is a perfectly respectable wet-morning activity.
