Girvan has more pubs per head than most towns its size, and the villages around it have kept a surprising number of theirs — Ballantrae's was bought by the community when it was about to be lost. This directory lists what is open as of our last check, grouped by place, with street addresses so you can find them. Hours in a small town shift with the season and the licensee, and several of these are run by one or two people, so if you are making a special trip ring ahead or check their Facebook page. We also list bars that have closed, because old directories and maps still show them.

When to go

  • Live music: the Harbour Bar (upstairs venue) and the Swee most weekends; everything in town during the folk festival in May.
  • Sport: the Swee, the Commercial, the Athletic Tavern.
  • A sunset drink: the Harbour Bar beer garden, The Ropes at Maidens, Woodland Bay, the Ailsa Bar at Turnberry.
  • Food with your pint: the King's Arms Ballantrae, Kirkmichael Arms, Souter's Inn, the Vaults, the Greenside.
  • Real ale: thin on the ground — the King's Arms Ballantrae keeps a handpump; Turnberry and the Kirkmichael Arms have the widest bottle and cask choice.
