Wigtownshire County Golf Club, Glenluce

A friendly seaside links that stays open when the rest are underwater.

Pictured: Girvan seafront villas below the Carrick hills — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Half a mile off the A75 at Glenluce, 'the County' lays its eighteen holes along the shore of Luce Bay on sandy turf that drains so well that winter greens are hardly ever used. The front nine dates from 1894 and the back from 1987; the course is mostly flat with subtly sloping greens, three short holes, one par-five and a great deal of wind off the bay, which is the real defence. At a little over 6,000 yards it is honest rather than fearsome, kept in very good condition, and has a deserved reputation as the most welcoming club in the south-west for visiting golfers and holiday parties — reviewers single out the clubhouse staff. The par-four 12th is the signature hole.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

How much is Wigtownshire County Golf Club?

£60 for 18 holes in summer 2026 (1 April–31 October), £85 for a day ticket, £35 after 4pm, and £35 in winter, per the club's published fees.

Is Wigtownshire County a links course?

Yes — a flat, true links on the sandy shore of Luce Bay that is playable all year with rarely used winter greens.

Why is it good in winter?

The sandy turf along Luce Bay drains so well that winter greens are hardly ever needed — which is unusual, and makes it one of the more reliable winter rounds in the south-west.

How old is the course?

The front nine dates from 1894 and the back nine was added in 1987, which is why the two halves feel slightly different.

Is it hilly?

No, it is mostly flat, with subtly sloping greens. That makes it a good choice for mixed-ability groups and anyone who does not want a climb.

Is there a discount for members of other clubs?

Yes — members of Portpatrick, Stranraer, Newton Stewart, St Medan, and Wigtown & Bladnoch pay £15.

How do you book?

Online if you have a Scottish Golf membership number; otherwise by email or on 01581 300420. Day and week tickets are by phone or email only. Book early in summer.

Is there a pro shop?

No. There is a clubhouse bar and dining room, changing rooms, a putting green, a practice area, and trolley and club hire, but no professional's shop.

What else is nearby?

Sandhead beach and Glenluce Abbey are both about ten minutes away, which makes it the natural 'play on the way' on a Rhins day from Girvan.
