Girvan is squeezed between the sea and the Carrick hills, which means you can choose between a completely flat mile of promenade and a seven-hundred-foot climb without moving your car. Both start within a few hundred yards of each other.
The Ayrshire Coastal Path runs straight through the town, and buses shadow the A77 to the south — so the linear routes work as walk-one-way days rather than there-and-backs.
Choose your walk
| Want | Route | Distance |
|---|---|---|
| Flat and step-free | The promenade | 2 miles return |
| Town and history | Heritage trail | 1.5 miles |
| A big view, quickly | Byne Hill | 3 miles, steep |
| A proper day on the coast | Lendalfoot to Girvan | 6 miles, bus out |
| The high route | Grey Hill ridge | 5.5 miles |
| Flat, north, with a lighthouse | Girvan to Turnberry | 8 miles, bus back |
Where to start
The harbour car park for the promenade, the heritage trail and anything northwards. Ainslie Park, at the south end of the prom, for Byne Hill and the coastal path south. Both are free.
Practical notes
The promenade and heritage trail are on tarmac and need nothing more than shoes. Everything else wants boots — the hill ground is grass and bog with no constructed path, and the shore sections are pebble and rock.
Carry OS Explorer 317 for anything off tarmac, check the tide before any shore walk, and remember that the hills behind the town are working farmland with sheep: dogs on leads near livestock, and close the gates.
For routes further afield — Culzean, the Galloway hills, the Merrick — see walking near Girvan.
