Dog-Friendly Girvan

A mile of beach with no dog ban, a flat prom, hill walks from the car park and pubs that keep a water bowl. This is a good coast for dogs.

Dog-friendlyBeachesWalksPubs

Girvan is an easy town for a dog. Unlike many resort beaches there is no summer dog ban here, the promenade is flat and bin-lined, the harbour and gardens are open, and the wilder coast south of Kennedy's Pass is as dog-friendly as any in Scotland under the right-to-roam code. The things to know are about wildlife — ground-nesting birds at Ballantrae, seals at the harbour, sheep on every hill — and about the handful of places dogs can't go.

Beaches

  • Girvan Beach — dogs welcome all year along the whole mile; bins on the prom; fresh water at the harbour. Keep clear of the play park and boating pond area, and of the river mouth where seals haul out.
  • Turnberry Beach — three miles of empty sand; the best off-lead run on the coast. Golfers on the links at the north end.
  • Maidens Beach — small and sheltered; fine with dogs, busier in summer.
  • Culzean beach — dogs on leads in the country park (not in the castle); the beach and cliff paths are superb.
  • Croy Shore — quiet sand and rock pools; good off-lead at low tide.
  • Ballantrae — a nature reserve: terns and ringed plover nest on the shingle April–August, so leads on and stay off the roped areas.
  • Lendalfoot and Kennedy's Pass — rocky shore, no restrictions, but watch the A77.

Walks

  • The promenade (2 miles return, flat, step-free) is the daily walk; extend to Byne Hill from Ainslie Park — sheep graze it, so leads near livestock.
  • The Ayrshire Coastal Path stages are excellent with a dog; the Lendalfoot to Girvan stage crosses farmland with cattle and has a ladder stile — a small or lift-able dog is easier.
  • Culzean Country Park — miles of waymarked trails, leads required.
  • Galloway Forest Park — Loch Trool, Kirroughtree and the forest drives welcome dogs; red deer and ground-nesting black grouse mean leads on open moor.
  • The Girvan valley lanes to Dailly and Barr's forest trails are quiet and shady for hot days.

Pubs and cafés

  • The Harbour Bar — dogs welcome in the bar and beer garden; the festival session pubs generally are.
  • The Swee, Flynn's Boatyard (beer garden) and the King's Arms, Ballantrae are relaxed about well-behaved dogs; ask at the door.
  • David's Snack Bar at Ainslie Park and The Ropes terrace at Maidens are outdoor, so no problem.
  • Graziano's takeaway and a bench on the harbour wall is the classic dog-owner's lunch.
  • Souter's Inn, Kirkoswald, and the Kirkmichael Arms take dogs in their bar areas (check for the dining room).
  • Most cafés on Dalrymple Street are small; ask, or use the outside tables.

Where to stay

Girvan has a good supply of dog-friendly self-catering — seafront cottages a minute from the beach are the ideal — and several B&Bs accept dogs by arrangement. Woodland Bay Hotel south of the town, Wildings at Maidens and Glenapp Castle (which positively welcomes dogs and has its own estate walks) all take dogs in some rooms; the Royal and Westcliffe should be asked directly. Caravan parks at Turnberry, Maidens and Ballantrae are dog-friendly. Filter for 'pets allowed' on the booking sites and see our accommodation page.

Where dogs can't go

  • Ailsa Craig — an RSPB reserve; skippers won't take dogs and the island is no place for them.
  • Castle and house interiors — Culzean, the Burns museum, Souter Johnnie's Cottage (assistance dogs excepted).
  • The Quay Zone, Stumpy Tower and the McKechnie Institute.
  • Golf courses except on the public coastal-path right of way.
  • Boat trips generally, unless agreed with the skipper.

Wildlife and courtesy

Keep dogs away from seals at the harbour and on the rocks — a startled seal can bite and a disturbed pup may be abandoned. On the hills, sheep and cattle are everywhere; the Scottish Outdoor Access Code asks for leads near livestock and during lambing (March–May) and bird nesting (April–July). Bag it and bin it: bins run the length of the prom and the harbour.

Vets and emergencies

Girvan has a veterinary practice in the town (check current hours), with larger practices and out-of-hours cover in Ayr and Stranraer. Pet shops and supermarkets on Dalrymple Street stock food. For a dog in trouble on the shore, call the coastguard on 999 — don't go in after it.

A dog's day in Girvan

Early beach at low tide; coffee from Simpsons eaten on the harbour wall; the coastal path to Kennedy's Pass and back; a fish supper on the prom; a pint in the Harbour Bar garden; sunset behind Ailsa Craig. Repeat.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

Are dogs allowed on Girvan beach?

Yes, all year, with no seasonal restrictions. Bins are along the promenade.

Are there dog-friendly pubs in Girvan?

Yes — the Harbour Bar is the best known, and most of the town's bars welcome well-behaved dogs; ask at the door.

Can I take my dog to Culzean Castle?

Into the country park, on a lead, yes — including the beach and cliff paths. Not into the castle itself.

Can dogs go on the Ailsa Craig boat?

No. Ailsa Craig is a bird reserve and operators do not take dogs.
