Girvan is a small town, but it covers the essentials well, and almost everything is on or near Dalrymple Street, the main street, or at the harbour. Opening hours below were checked in November 2026 against each business's own listing; they change, so treat them as a guide.
Food shopping
- ASDA, 15 Vicarton Street, KA26 9HF, at the north end of town beside the station. The main supermarket. Monday to Saturday 7am to 11pm, Sunday 8am to 10pm. Car park and cash machine. 01465 711000.
- Morrisons Daily, 106 Dalrymple Street. A convenience store in the town centre, in the building that was the Co-op until 2017.
- Smaller shops: Girvan has a family butcher, greengrocers, bakers and several convenience stores along Dalrymple Street. See shopping in Girvan for the independents.
There is no Tesco, Aldi or Lidl in Girvan. Ayr, half an hour north by road or rail, has every big supermarket.
Banking and cash
Girvan's Bank of Scotland branch closed in 2024. In its place, the Girvan Banking Hub at 14 Dalrymple Street opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Customers of most major banks can withdraw and deposit cash, pay in cheques and pay bills at the Post Office counter inside, and on set days a community banker from one of the banks is there for appointments: Bank of Scotland on Wednesdays and TSB on Thursdays, with other banks on other days. Check your bank's website for its day.
There is a cash machine at ASDA. Carry some cash: a number of small businesses here prefer it.
Post Office
Girvan Post Office, 4 Chalmers Arcade. Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm, closed Sunday. Parcels, travel money, Drop & Go and banking services. There is also a Post Office counter in the banking hub.
Pharmacy
- Boots, 39 Dalrymple Street. Monday to Friday 9am to 5.30pm, Saturday 9am to 5pm, closed Sunday. 01465 712234.
- There is also a Boots pharmacy at Girvan Community Hospital, on Bridgemill. Check its hours before going.
Outside these hours, phone NHS 24 on 111.
Medical help
- Emergencies: dial 999.
- Urgent but not an emergency: phone NHS 24 on 111, day or night. If you have a minor injury, call 111 first and ask for the minor injuries service, so you are sent to the right place.
- Girvan Community Hospital, Bridgemill, KA26 9HQ, 01465 712571. Its minor injuries service runs Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.30pm, and the hospital has X-ray, two GP practices and a pharmacy. Free parking.
- Out of hours and at weekends, the nearest minor injuries units are at University Hospital Ayr and University Hospital Crosshouse, open seven days, 9.30am to 10pm.
- Nearest A&E: University Hospital Ayr, Dalmellington Road, Ayr, KA6 6DX. It is the emergency department for South Ayrshire, about half an hour from Girvan by car.
Fuel
Old Street Garage, an Esso station at 23 to 25 Old Street, is the petrol station in the town. Heading south, the next is at Ballantrae, 13 miles away; heading north, Ayr. If you are driving the coast road south towards Stranraer or into the Galloway hills, fill up in Girvan.
EV charging
Girvan's public chargers are run by the council through the Ayrshire Roads Alliance:
- Harbour car park, Knockcushan Street: a 50kW rapid charger (CCS and CHAdeMO) and a 22kW fast charger. Two minutes' walk from the harbour, the Quay Zone and the shops.
- Railway station car park: two 22kW connectors.
- Chalmers Arcade car park, in the town centre: 7kW chargers.
Since July 2025 the council's price has been 50p per kWh on standard chargers and 70p per kWh on rapids, with a £5 minimum and overstay fees if you leave a car plugged in too long. The network is changing: the chargers are moving from ChargePlace Scotland to a new operator, Believ, and the ChargePlace Scotland network closes at the end of 2026, so payment methods and prices will change. Check Zapmap for live status before you rely on a charger.
Other useful places
- Girvan Library, 17 to 19 Knockcushan Street, beside the harbour. Monday 11am to 7pm, Tuesday to Saturday 9am to 5pm. Public computers can be booked, and it is a warm, dry place to sit on a wet afternoon.
- Public toilets at the harbour (open 24 hours, 50p, card payment only), at Ainslie Park (50p, with a RADAR key toilet) and at the Flushes (free), plus the Quay Zone during its opening hours. The Ainslie Park and Flushes toilets keep shorter hours from September to March.
- Tourist Information Point, the Town House, Knockcushan Street, next to the lifeboat station. Run by volunteers, open daily from late March to late September. See visitor information.
- Vets: Alan Jeans Veterinary Services and Corner Veterinary Centre are both in the town. See dog-friendly Girvan.
- Hardware: Wright's Home Hardware, 42 to 46 Dalrymple Street, open seven days.
