Day Trip: The Wild Coast South to Ballantrae

Thirteen miles of the wildest coast in Ayrshire, and a castle for tea.

Pictured: Girvan harbour — a general view of the area, not of this place.

South of Girvan the road runs out of flat ground and the coast turns wild. In thirteen miles it gives you a mountain pass on the shoreline, a Russian shipwreck memorial, a beach made of ancient ocean floor, a headland with a notorious legend attached, and a five-star castle where you can have tea. It is the shortest day on this list and one of the best, particularly out of season when the sea is up.

Notes on the stops

Kennedy's Pass is where the A77 is cut into the cliff above the sea. There are lay-bys to stop in, and the old coach road over Pinbain makes an hour's walk with the whole firth below you.

Lendalfoot is the heart of the day. The Varyag memorial commemorates a Russian cruiser wrecked here in 1925 under tow to the breakers, and its free car park is the best base. The shore is internationally important geology — pillow lavas and serpentinites of the Ballantrae Complex, rock that was once the floor of a vanished ocean — and it is superb for pebbles and rock pools. Carleton Castle stands on the hill behind.

Bennane Head has a viewpoint car park and the wide view south. The cove below is Balcreuchan Port, whose caves are associated with the Sawney Bean legend, a lurid tale of a cannibal clan that has almost no historical basis. We would not recommend attempting the descent: it is steep, loose and slippery, the tide cuts the shore off, and people have needed rescuing from it. The story is better told from the viewpoint.

Ballantrae is lunch: a shingle spit at the mouth of the Stinchar with a wildlife reserve on it, the ruin of Ardstinchar Castle above the bridge, and a harbour. Check what is open before you count on a particular pub.

Glenapp Castle, two miles on, is a five-star country house hotel in its own woodland. Afternoon tea is open to non-residents but must be booked, and it turns a short day into a memorable one.

Making a walk of it

The best version of this day swaps some driving for walking. Take the bus south and walk the coastal path from Lendalfoot back to Girvan — about seven miles over the old coach road, with the sea below you the whole way. Buses run between Girvan and Ballantrae, so you can start or finish almost anywhere along the route.

Practical notes

Free throughout, apart from what you eat. The A77 here is fast and narrow with limited pull-ins, so use the proper lay-bys and car parks rather than the verge. In winter storms the pass occasionally suffers rockfall and can close — check before setting out. There are no facilities at all at Lendalfoot or Bennane, so carry water and a flask.

Suggested plan

How to spend your time

  1. 10.00
    Kennedy's Pass

Lay-by stop for the cliffs and the rock, or walk the old coach road over Pinbain Hill — about an hour.

  2. 11.30
    Lendalfoot

The Varyag memorial, the shore geology and rock pools, and Carleton Castle from the road.

  3. 12.30
    Bennane Head

The viewpoint car park and the long view south. Admire the caves from above rather than below.

  4. 13.30
    Ballantrae

Lunch, then the shingle spit and the climb to Ardstinchar Castle.

  5. 15.30
    Glenapp Castle

Afternoon tea in the five-star castle — book ahead — and a walk through the grounds.

  6. 17.30
    Home

Twenty minutes back up the A77, or inland the long way through Colmonell and Barr.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

How far is the wild coast day trip?

About 30 miles round from Girvan — the shortest of our day trips, and easily done in half a day if you are not stopping to walk.

What is the Varyag memorial?

A monument at Lendalfoot to the Russian cruiser Varyag, wrecked on the rocks there in 1925 while being towed to Germany for scrap. There is a free car park at the site.

Can you visit Sawney Bean's cave?

We would not recommend it. The descent to the caves below Bennane Head is steep, loose and slippery, the tide can cut the shore off, and people have had to be rescued. View it from the headland instead — and note the legend has almost no historical basis.

Why is the geology at Lendalfoot important?

The shore exposes the Ballantrae Complex — pillow lavas, serpentinites and fragments of ancient ocean floor thrust up when an ocean closed some 480 million years ago. It is internationally significant and free to walk on.

Can you have afternoon tea at Glenapp Castle?

Yes, non-residents can book afternoon tea at the five-star castle hotel near Ballantrae. Booking ahead is essential.

Can you do this trip without a car?

Yes, and it may be the better way. Buses run between Girvan and Ballantrae along the coast, so you can ride out and walk back — the coastal path from Lendalfoot to Girvan is about seven miles.

Is there anywhere to eat along this route?

Ballantrae, and Glenapp for afternoon tea. There is nothing at all at Lendalfoot or Bennane Head, so carry water and something to eat.
