Breakfast is the meal Girvan does best, largely because the cafés here are the unpretentious sort that open early and serve a proper cooked plate for not much money.
In town
- Maly's Café, Dalrymple Street — the default cooked breakfast in Girvan. Open early, generous and good value, and used by everybody.
- Simpsons Bakers, Dalrymple Street — bacon or square-sausage rolls and a coffee to take away. The cheapest breakfast in town, and best eaten sitting on the harbour wall.
- The Harbour Café side of Graziano's — a later brunch rather than an early breakfast, with window seats over the boats.
The van with the view
David's Snack Bar in the Ainslie car park, at the southern end of the promenade, does breakfasts from the van — eaten looking straight at Ailsa Craig. It has been there over twenty years, it is where walkers come off the coastal path, and on a clear morning it is the best breakfast view in the district for about a fiver.
Heading out for the day
- Souter's Inn, Kirkoswald — serves from 9am, fifteen minutes north, which makes it the obvious stop on the way to Culzean.
- The Greenside, Maybole — from 10am on its opening days.
If you are staying
Most B&Bs and the town's hotels do a full Scottish breakfast for guests, and it is generally worth taking — see where to stay.
A local note
The Girvan prom parkrun finishes around 10.15 on Saturday mornings, and a good part of the field goes straight to the cafés afterwards. If you want a quiet breakfast on a Saturday, go before ten or after eleven.
Sunday is the thin day: several places open later or not at all, particularly out of season. See cafés in Girvan.
