The Saughhill race is the Gathering's hill race. At 14:00 the field leaves Victory Park, climbs 265 metres into the hills behind the town over 4.5 kilometres, and comes back down while the pipe bands are still playing. It is short and steep, and most runners would call that a fair deal.
The 2026 programme describes it as an official Scottish Athletics race. It is open to any runner, and you do not have to be a club member.
Entering
- Entry is on the day: £2 for seniors and £1 for juniors.

The kids' race
There is a shorter race for children, up to the top of Johnnie's Road and back down, so younger runners get their own start on the day.
Girvan Harriers
Girvan Harriers (formerly Girvan AAC) is the town's running club, for anyone who wants to get out running, whatever their ability. They train on Tuesdays at 18:00 and Thursdays at 19:00, meeting at the main entrance of Girvan Academy on The Avenue, and plan a route or session from there.
Make a weekend of it
The race is one part of a full day at the Gathering, with pipe bands, Highland dancing and heavy events on the same field, so it is easy to bring people who are not running. If you want more hills while you are here, Byne Hill is the town's own hill walk, and the prom parkrun runs every Saturday morning.
