No experience at all
- Girvan putting green on the seafront by the boating pond — in season, pennies, everyone.
- Turnberry's Wee Links pitch-and-putt and Cairngorms putting green — open to non-residents and families, 12 minutes away; the Golf Academy runs lessons with PGA professionals and TrackMan simulators.
- Portpatrick's Dinvin — nine par-threes, about an hour, kept to the same standard as the main course; 'ideal for the beginner who does not feel up to the rigours of 18 holes'.
- Royal Troon's Craigend — nine par-threes used by juniors and members (ask about access).
First full rounds
- Maybole — 9 open holes, the council's own recommendation for beginners, its cheapest fee.
- Fullarton, Troon — par 64, 4,800 yards, on real linksland: the best place to feel a links without being beaten by one.
- Dalmilling — flat, wide, forgiving; 'ideal for regular play and beginners alike'.
- Seafield — Belleisle's easier sister.
- Girvan — short and cheap, but eight long par-threes in wind will test you; play on a calm evening.
- Wigtownshire County — flat, friendly, no handicap needed, £60 (£35 twilight); a true links that won't bully you.

Etiquette for first-timers
Book a quiet time (weekday mornings after 10, or late afternoon), tell the starter you're new, keep up with the group ahead rather than slowing the group behind, let faster players through, rake bunkers, repair pitch marks, and wear a collared shirt and trousers or tailored shorts — every course here will then be glad to see you.
