Girvan eats simply and well. Knockcushan Street, facing the harbour, is where it happens: two chip shops, a gelateria that makes its own, the town's best restaurant and its most characterful pub, all within a couple of hundred yards. Dalrymple Street has the cafes, the bakery, the curry house and the Chinese.
Ten minutes up the coast at Maidens is the best restaurant on this stretch, and fifteen minutes inland at Kirkoswald is an inn that serves all day.
If you want one recommendation
A fish supper from Graziano's eaten in a promenade shelter an hour before sunset, with Ailsa Craig on the horizon. It costs a few pounds and it is genuinely the best meal in Girvan. For a table and a tablecloth, Austins on the harbour, or Wildings at Maidens.
Two things that catch visitors out
Kitchens stop early. Aim to eat before 8pm, earlier out of season. An 8pm booking is late here rather than fashionable.
Early in the week is hardest. Several places close two or three days, most often at the start of the week, and out of season that tightens further. Ring ahead rather than driving down, keep a takeaway in reserve, or head to Souter's Inn at Kirkoswald, which serves all day from 9am.
