The harbour end of Girvan is built for families, and the geography does most of the work: the beach, play park, boating pond and putting green are all together, with the chip shop and the ice cream across the road and toilets nearby. You can park once and eat without a plan.
In Girvan
- The Harbour Café side of Graziano's, Knockcushan Street — children's menu, high chairs, quick service and window seats over the boats. The default with hungry children who have been on the beach.
- The Gelateria — gelato made on the premises, a minute along, and the reliable bribe at the end of a long walk.
- Maly's Café, Dalrymple Street — all-day, good value, generous, and used to families.
- Simpsons Bakers, Dalrymple Street — rolls, pies and cakes for a cheap picnic to take to the beach.
- Girvan Pizzeria and A1 Munch for takeaway pizza to eat on the prom.
Within twenty minutes
- Souter's Inn, Kirkoswald — open all day from 9am, bright and modern inside, and comfortable with family groups. The best proper sit-down meal with children in the area.
- The Ropes, Maidens — pizza and cake on a terrace over the harbour, and a beach next to it.
- Culzean's Home Farm and Swan Pond cafés — if you are at Culzean anyway, both are set up for families and there are two playgrounds.
- Heads of Ayr Farm Park has its own café, and you are unlikely to be leaving early.
The free option
A picnic on the grass by the boating pond and play park is the cheapest and often the best answer: buy rolls or pies from Simpsons, let the children run, and skip the sitting-still-in-a-restaurant part entirely. There are benches and picnic tables, and shelters on the prom if the wind gets up.
Practical notes
Most kitchens in Girvan stop early — aim to eat before 8pm, earlier out of season, and ring ahead on a Sunday or Monday. See Girvan with children and rainy day for what to do around the meal.
