Day Trips from Girvan

Seven days out, each with a route, timings, where to eat and a wet-weather swap.

ItinerariesCarCar-free

Girvan is within ninety minutes of an astonishing variety of places — two of Scotland's finest castles, the biggest dark sky park in Europe, a sub-tropical garden, an island with a mountain on it, and the poet's birthplace. The trick is to combine them sensibly rather than dash between them.

Each plan below is a realistic day, starting and ending in Girvan, with drive times from the harbour and a wet-weather alternative. They are deliberately unhurried: this is a part of Scotland where the driving is half the pleasure, and where trying to fit in one more thing usually spoils the last one.

Which day to pick

If you havePick
Children in the carThe Carrick castle coast — castles, beaches and a farm park
A wet forecastBurns country and Ayr — museums, a cinema and galleries
One fine day onlyThe Galloway forest loop, for the biggest scenery
An early start and staminaStranraer and the Rhins, ending at Scotland's southern tip
Half a dayThe wild coast south to Ballantrae
No carTrain to Ayr, or south to Stranraer

Before you set off

Almost everything on these routes is seasonal to some degree. Castle interiors, gardens, lighthouses and forest drives generally run from around Easter to late October, and several close entirely from November. Village pubs and cafés in the inland glens keep short and changeable hours. Check the individual pages, and phone ahead if a particular lunch is the point of the day.

Fuel is worth a thought too: there is none between Barr and Glentrool, none on the Nick of the Balloch, and none between Cairnryan and Stranraer. Fill up in Girvan.

Days out without a car

Girvan has a railway station and buses north and south, so you can do a surprising amount without a car — Ayr and Alloway by train and bus, Maybole for Crossraguel, Stranraer and Portpatrick, Culzean and Maidens on the 60, and coastal path walks with a bus back.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

What is the best day trip from Girvan?

For most first-time visitors, the Carrick castle coast — Turnberry lighthouse, Culzean Castle, the Electric Brae and Dunure — is the one to do. It is short, varied and takes in the best coast road in Ayrshire.

Can you do day trips from Girvan without a car?

Yes. Girvan is on the Glasgow–Stranraer railway and has bus routes north and south, so Ayr, Alloway, Maybole, Stranraer and the coastal path villages are all reachable. See our car-free day page.

How far is Girvan from Glasgow?

About 55 miles, or roughly an hour and a half by car. The train takes a little under two hours with a change at Ayr on some services.

Can you visit Arran from Girvan in a day?

Yes, but it is a long day. You drive north to catch a CalMac ferry, and the crossing arrangements change, so check the current port and timetable and book ahead.

What is there to do near Girvan when it rains?

The Burns country and Ayr day works well in bad weather — indoor museums at Alloway, and a cinema, theatre and free galleries in Ayr. See our rainy day page.

How long does the Galloway forest loop take?

A full day. It is about 90 miles including the Nick of the Balloch and Glen Trool, and the roads are slow by design — allow eight hours with a walk and lunch.
