Wildings has two contemporary dining rooms on the edge of Maidens harbour, two miles from Turnberry's lighthouse, and it has been the region's go-to for a celebratory dinner for a long time. If someone in Girvan tells you to book somewhere for an anniversary, this is usually what they mean.
The food
The strength is seafood, landed locally and treated simply — the fish specials change with what has come in, and are worth asking about rather than ordering straight off the printed menu. Alongside it there is Ayrshire beef and lamb, and the kitchen has a fondness for the kind of dish that has been on Scottish menus for forty years and is very good when done properly.
It is not a fashionable room and it does not pretend to be. Reviewers regularly describe it as a bit of a time warp, and mean it kindly: white linen, attentive long-serving staff, and food that arrives as described.
The view
The dining rooms and terrace look straight out over the harbour to Arran, and on a clear evening the sunset does most of the work. Ask for a window table when you book — see places to eat with sea views.
Practical notes
Lunch runs Monday to Saturday 12–2pm and Sunday 12–2.30pm; dinner is daily 6–9pm. Booking is essential, especially at weekends, in summer and during golf events at Turnberry, when the whole coast fills up. Confirm hours when you book, as they can shift seasonally.
There are rooms upstairs, several with sea views, which makes it a straightforward option if you would rather not drive after dinner — see where to stay.
Fourteen minutes north of Girvan, with parking at the Harbour Road car park. It combines naturally with an afternoon at Culzean or the walk to Turnberry lighthouse — see Maidens.
