Troon's council golf is one of the best-kept secrets in Scottish golf tourism: three full courses on the same stretch of linksland as Royal Troon, sharing a modern clubhouse on Harling Drive, bookable online by anyone at municipal prices. Lochgreen is the serious one — over 6,800 yards from the back tees, par 74, with proper links turf and big greens; it is used for Open Championship final qualifying when the Open is at Troon and hosts the Cunningham Rosebowl open. Darley is shorter but many locals think harder, threaded through gorse and heather with narrow landing areas. Fullarton is the short course, par 64 with plenty of par-threes, perfect for beginners, juniors and a quick round. The clubhouse was upgraded 'to a very high standard' with panoramic views, a café and bar, and a PGA professional with hire equipment.

Fees and packages

Lochgreen and Darley sit at the top of the Golf South Ayrshire fee scale with Belleisle; Fullarton in the middle. All are included in the council's £560 season ticket (2025–26). The Troon Links Experience gives three rounds — one on each course — over three days, with a two-round mini version; tee times are reserved at booking.

Getting there

45 minutes from Girvan by the A77, or about an hour by train via Ayr; the courses are a short walk from Troon station. Combine with a Royal Troon visitor day, the Arran ferry or Troon beach.

Prices and visitor policies checked August 2026 against the club's own website and cross-checked with independent golf guides. Clubs revise rates every season and restrict visitor times around competitions, so confirm directly before you book.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

Which of the Troon council courses is best?

Lochgreen for a championship-length links test (it hosts Open final qualifying); Darley for a tighter, tougher round; Fullarton for beginners or a quick 18.

How do I book the Troon Links courses?

Online through Golf South Ayrshire or by phone on 01292 616255. Visitors are welcome daily.

Can anyone play the Troon council courses?

Yes — all three are bookable online by anyone at municipal prices, on the same stretch of linksland as Royal Troon.

What is Lochgreen like?

The serious one: over 6,800 yards, par 74, and used as an Open final-qualifying venue. It is genuinely a championship test at a council green fee.

Which course suits beginners?

Fullarton — par 64 and around 4,800 yards, designed for quick rounds and new golfers, and priced in the middle of the council range rather than the top.

What is the Troon Links Experience?

A package giving three rounds, one on each course, over three days, with a two-round version also available.

How much do they cost?

Lochgreen and Darley sit at the top of the Golf South Ayrshire scale alongside Belleisle; Fullarton is mid-range. All three are included in the council season ticket.

What are the facilities like?

A recently upgraded shared clubhouse on Harling Drive with panoramic views, a café, bar and professional — much better than most people expect from municipal golf.

How do you get there from Girvan?
