The Quay Zone is Girvan's leisure centre, standing right on the harbour, and it is the town's main wet-weather answer. It opened in 2017 as a £6 million community facility, built after a long local fundraising effort, and it is run by South Carrick Community Leisure, a registered charity, rather than by the council.
What happened, and what is open
In 2024 a storm damaged the roof and the building closed. It stayed shut for two years, during which members were sent to the pool at Maybole while repairs were worked through.
It reopened on 23 January 2026, with the pool, the gym and the fitness studio all back in use and running seven days a week. The gym was refitted with new cardio, resistance and free-weight equipment, and the studio has a new sprung beechwood floor.
The café, the four-level soft play, the outdoor terrace and the upper viewing deck were not part of that first phase. They form a second phase of works, expected during 2026. If soft play is the reason you are going, check first — it is the single most common reason visitors turn up here disappointed.
For visitors
The pool timetable mixes public and lane swimming, aquafit, adult and children's lessons, and fun sessions with inflatables and floats — the last of these being the one to look for if you have children and a wet afternoon. The studio runs a full class programme: spin, yoga, kettlebells, circuits, barbell and conditioning.
You do not need to be a member. Pay-as-you-go works for both pool and gym, though first-time gym users need an induction. Check the timetable online before setting off, as public swim slots are limited and lessons take up much of the day in term time.
Practical notes
Free parking at the harbour car park immediately outside. There is accessible changing and pool access equipment for those with limited mobility. The building is a ten-minute walk from the station and right beside the harbour, so it slots easily into a day in town.
Hours as a guide are roughly 6.15am to 9pm Monday to Thursday, to 7pm on Friday, and 8am to 4pm at weekends — but confirm on the day. See Girvan on a rainy day and Girvan with children.
