Maybole Castle and the Collegiate Church

The Earl of Cassillis's town house and the church his ancestors built to pray for their souls.

Pictured: Girvan beach at dusk — a general view of the area, not of this place.

Maybole was the capital of Carrick and the Kennedys' town, and two buildings survive to prove it.

The castle

Maybole Castle stands at the bottom of the High Street: a tall L-plan tower house with corbelled angle turrets, conical caps and a fine oriel window. Its date is genuinely disputed — Historic Environment Scotland's statutory listing says probably the first quarter of the seventeenth century, Canmore suggests it may go back to around 1540, and tourism sources tend to say about 1560. It was the Earls of Cassillis's town house — the place the family stayed when business brought them in from Culzean or Cassillis — and it is remarkable chiefly for having survived in a working high street when almost every comparable building did not.

It was long used as the estate offices of the Cassillis and Culzean estates, and remains in estate ownership. A conversion to an "Enterprising Carrick Hub" was funded in 2021 and started on site in 2023, but we have not been able to confirm that it completed or that anything opened to the public. The interior is not open, so treat it as a building to see from the street.

The Collegiate Church

It is closed. Historic Environment Scotland has the collegiate church shut while conservation work is carried out, and no reopening date has been published. You can see it from the boundary on Abbot Street and no more. Check the HES site before travelling.

On Abbot Street, in a walled kirkyard, stands the roofless Collegiate Church. A chapel was established here in 1371 by Sir John Kennedy of Dunure and raised to collegiate status about 1381, with a provost, two chaplains and a clerk singing masses for the family in perpetuity. (HES's scheduled monument record gives 1382 for the foundation, so even the official dates differ.) Most of the walls stand near their original height, with flowing window tracery and dog-tooth moulding on the doorways.

The Kennedy earls of Cassillis were buried here into the late 1600s, and mass was still being publicly celebrated in the building in 1564, four years after the Reformation, by a congregation of two hundred.

It is a quiet, unvisited spot two minutes from a busy street, and it makes the point about this family's dominance better than any castle: they endowed a college of priests to pray for them in perpetuity.

Visiting

Free, but with the church closed you are looking at both from outside. Thirty minutes covers it. Park at Kirk Wynd, the town's free council car park.

Maybole is on the A77 about twenty minutes from Girvan, with Crossraguel Abbey two miles south and Culzean ten minutes west — see Maybole and the Kennedys of Carrick for how the pieces fit together.

Questions visitors ask

Frequently asked

Can you go inside Maybole Castle?

No. It is in estate ownership and the interior is not open. A conversion project was funded in 2021 and began in 2023, but we could not confirm it completed. The exterior, with its corbelled angle turrets and carved oriel window, can be seen from the High Street.

What is the Collegiate Church?

A roofless medieval church on Abbot Street, established as a chapel about 1371 by Sir John Kennedy of Dunure and made collegiate around 1381, with priests singing masses for the family in perpetuity. It is currently closed for conservation work with no reopening date published.

Is it free?

Yes, both are free to see from outside. Neither interior is open at present: the castle is in estate use and the collegiate church is closed for conservation.

Why is Maybole important to the Kennedys?

Maybole was the capital of Carrick and the Kennedys' town. The castle was the Earls of Cassillis's town house and the collegiate church was their family foundation.

How far is Maybole from Girvan?

About 20 minutes on the A77, with Crossraguel Abbey two miles south and Culzean ten minutes west.

What else is there in Maybole?

The old town itself, the Greenside for lunch, and the golf course. Crossraguel and Culzean are both very close.
