If you go to one pub in Girvan, make it this one. The Harbour Bar sits right on Knockcushan Street at the inner harbour, and it is three quite different places under one roof.
The front bar
This is the reason to come. The front bar has barely changed since the 1960s — an unmodernised Scottish harbour bar, small, wood-lined and worn in all the right places, where fishermen, boat crews and locals drink alongside whoever has wandered in off the prom. There is no theme and no refit. Rooms like this are getting rare, and this one is the real article.
The lounge and upstairs
The lounge is the comfortable option, and where food is served when the kitchen is on.
Upstairs @ The Harbour is a 70-seat venue hosting live music, comedy and other events through the year — genuinely programmed rather than an occasional singer in the corner. For a town of six thousand, having a proper small venue upstairs from a harbour bar is a considerable asset, and it is a large part of why the folk festival works.
The beer garden
Out the back there is a beer garden on the inner harbour, which on a warm evening with the boats in front of you is as good a place to sit as anywhere on the coast. It is one of the few outdoor drinking spots in town with a real view.
Practical notes
Food hours vary — check before planning a meal around it, and see pubs in Girvan or restaurants if you need a certain table. Dogs are generally welcome in the bar.
It is a two-minute walk from where the Ailsa Craig boats tie up, which makes it the natural end to a day on the water, and about ten minutes from the station. Graziano's chip shop is next door if you want a fish supper with your pint.
During the folk festival on the May bank holiday weekend, this and every other bar in town fills with sessions — see events.
