The Greenside is Maybole's contemporary restaurant: a bright, modernised room with an open kitchen built around a wood-fired pizza oven the owners made themselves. The menu mixes classic dishes with modern and international ones, and the pizzas are the thing people come back for — properly fired, not baked in a conveyor.
Why it is useful
It serves from 10am on its opening days, which makes it unusually flexible: coffee and something to eat mid-morning, a proper lunch, or dinner. Very few places between Girvan and Ayr do all three.
It is also twenty minutes from Girvan and ten from Culzean, with Crossraguel Abbey two miles down the road — which makes it the obvious stop on a Carrick heritage day, and a better option than driving back into Girvan hungry.
For families it works: bright, informal, used to children, and pizza solves most arguments.
Opening
Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday 10am to 8pm; Friday and Saturday 10am to 9pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday, which is worth noting given that early in the week is when Girvan itself is hardest to eat out in.
Booking is advisable at weekends. Takeaway is available, including the pizzas. Ring 01655 889685.
Getting there
Twenty minutes from Girvan on the A77, in the middle of Maybole — the old capital of Carrick, with its castle and collegiate church a short walk away. Parking in the town.
