Dundonald Links and Western Gailes Compared

Same dunes, one railway line apart, two completely different days out.

ComparisonLinks

Two championship links sit on the same stretch of duneland between Irvine and Troon, separated by a railway line. They cost roughly the same to reach from Girvan — about 55 minutes — and they are entirely different propositions.

Which to play

Play Western Gailes if you want the pure, historic links experience and your handicap fits. It is the better golf course by most rankings — a narrow, classic out-and-back layout squeezed between the railway and the shore — and the weekday fee includes lunch, which makes it a full day rather than a round.

Play Dundonald if you want flexibility. Any day of the week, instant online booking, no handicap limit, buggies available and accommodation on site. For a group of mixed abilities, or anyone who cannot commit to a fixed visitor window months ahead, it is much the easier day to organise — and it is £50–75 cheaper.

The third option nobody mentions

Gailes Links — Glasgow Golf Club's course, on the same duneland, 6,903 yards, and the last published rates were around £75–80 a round. That is a quarter of what Western Gailes charges. It is not as highly ranked as either, but it is genuine championship linksland at a fraction of the price, and it is the pick if the budget matters more than the name on the scorecard.

Doing all three

The Gailes Golf Experience package combines all three courses, which makes a serious multi-day trip on adjacent links. See golf breaks and best links courses near Girvan.

Prices and visitor policies checked August 2026 against the clubs' own websites and cross-checked with independent golf guides. Clubs revise rates every season and restrict visitor times around competitions, so confirm directly before travelling.
