Biosphere Bikes is a not-for-profit social enterprise near the promenade at Girvan beach, set up to bring accessible and inclusive cycling to the town and the wider South Carrick area. It works with local groups, and the point is participation rather than profit.
The bikes
The fleet includes e-bikes, children's bikes, trailers and adapted cycles, which between them cover most needs. E-bikes make a real difference here: the promenade is flat, but every route inland from Girvan involves a climb, and an e-bike turns the Girvan valley loop from a serious ride into a pleasant afternoon.
The obvious ride is the promenade — flat, surfaced and traffic-free from the harbour to Ainslie Park. Beyond that, the quiet valley roads to Dailly and Barr are among the emptiest in Scotland, and National Cycle Route 7 runs through the town. Avoid the A77, which carries the Irish ferry traffic.
The beach wheelchairs
This deserves its own mention, because very few Scottish beaches offer it: Biosphere Bikes has beach wheelchairs, with balloon tyres that work on sand where a standard chair simply sinks.
That makes Girvan beach genuinely accessible in a way most of this coast is not — and it is worth knowing about in advance rather than discovering by chance. Contact them ahead to arrange availability. See accessible Girvan.
Practical notes
Hours are seasonal, principally summer and weekends, and as a community operation staffed largely by volunteers they are not open every day. Check the website or contact them before travelling, particularly out of season or if you need something specific like a trailer or a beach wheelchair.
For the routes, see cycling around Girvan; for the flat family option, the promenade and the boating pond are two minutes away.
