Ayr Racecourse moved to its present site at Whitletts in 1907 and is the only Grade 1 track in Scotland. It runs both codes — flat and National Hunt — across roughly twenty-five fixtures a year, and two of those weekends draw the whole country.
The two big meetings
The Coral Scottish Grand National Festival, in April, is a two-day fixture built around a four-mile chase that came to Ayr after Bogside closed in the mid-1960s. It typically draws over 30,000 people across the two days. In 2026 it falls on 17 and 18 April.
The Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup Festival, in September, runs three days. The Friday is Ladies Day with the Style Awards; the Saturday carries the Ayr Gold Cup itself, one of the richest sprint handicaps in Europe, run over six furlongs with a full field of thundering horses across the track. Crowds on Gold Cup Saturday frequently pass 18,000. In 2026 it falls on 17, 18 and 19 September.
Dates move each year, so check the racecourse's own calendar before booking anything around them.
Going for the first time
You do not need to bet, and you do not need to understand racing. The spectacle is the thing: horses at close quarters, a crowd, and a course laid out so you can get near the rail. Between races there is a parade ring where the runners are walked before each event, which is where most newcomers end up.
Dress codes vary by enclosure and by fixture — the big festival days are dressier, ordinary fixtures are not. Check when you book.
Family Racedays run in summer with entertainment laid on for children, and are much the cheapest way in. There are also concerts after racing on some evenings, where the ticket covers both.
Practical notes
Tickets are sold online and the Gold Cup Saturday sells out well in advance. There is free parking on-course, with paid reserved options nearer the stands.
From Girvan it is about 35 minutes by car on the A77. Better, take the train to Ayr — around half an hour, direct — and walk the fifteen minutes or so to the course, which avoids both the race-day traffic and the question of driving home.
One warning if you are visiting Ayr for other reasons: on Scottish National and Gold Cup days, parking, traffic and restaurant tables across the whole town are affected. Either go for the racing or pick another date. See events.
