Adventure Carrick runs guided outdoor sessions from a base in Girvan, and it is not a seasonal operation — it is open all year round, which matters more than it sounds on a coast where most activity providers shut in September.
It is a branch of the Adventure Centre for Education (ACE), a registered charity that has been running activity programmes here since 2005, and it holds a licence from the Adventure Activities Licensing Service — the statutory scheme that inspects providers taking young people on this kind of activity. If you are handing over a child, that licence is the thing worth knowing about.
What they run
The signature activity is coasteering — scrambling along the rocky shore, climbing, working through sea caves and jumping into deep water, on the coast near Ballantrae. Wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets are provided and guides lead throughout.
Beyond that: sea kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, snorkelling, gorge walking, rock climbing, abseiling, mountain biking, hill walking, bushcraft, archery and overnight camps. There is an 'extreme rockpooling' version of coasteering for younger children, which is exactly what it sounds like and considerably better than it sounds.
They also do birthday parties for children from five, and bespoke sessions for groups.
Booking and age rules
Booking is required. Open sessions need a minimum of six participants to run — if you are a smaller group or want a date outside the published sessions, contact them for a bespoke price.
One rule to note: if a child under 16 is booked onto a session, a responsible adult must be on the shore or harbour for its duration — unless that adult is booked onto the session too. Worth planning for rather than discovering on the day.
Practical notes
Sessions run in most weather; this is Scotland and a wetsuit is a wetsuit. Some activities are seasonal even though the business is not, so check what is running when you book.
They are a certified activity provider within the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere. See Girvan with children and outdoor activities for the wider picture, and Kennedy's Pass for the coast they work on.
